1 John 5:20

1 John 5:20 says: “And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.”

Some Trinitarians teach that this text says Jesus is the “true God.”

Let us look, however, at the subject of the text who is “him that is true,” and the one who has come to give us an understanding of “him that is true,”  the “Son of God” has come to give us an understanding of him that is true.

The purpose in giving us this understanding is so that we may know “him that is true,” and to know him we must come to him by his “son” Jesus.

Jesus, himself, said, “No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him (John 1:18).”

Here Jesus shows that for us to be in “him that is true” we have to go through the Son.  In the verse John tells us about “him that is true”(the father) and “his son Jesus Christ) the son of the true God.

This is what Jesus, himself, says in John 17:3, and the meaning of both passages is the same.

“And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent (John 17:3).”
